The Michigan Unemployment Insurance Project is a law school pro bono project that recruits and trains volunteer law students to give free legal assistance to unemployed workers in Southeast Michigan seeking UI benefits. With average UI benefits at $300 a week and long-term unemployment high in Michigan, a regular state UI claim of the average 26-week duration represents $7,800 for a jobless individual and his or her family. Currently, with up to 79 weeks of UI available in Michigan, a denied claim represents a potential $23,700 in lost income for that individual and his or her family—income that can save a home and be recycled in the community through spending on necessities. By helping jobless workers obtain UI benefits, the MUIP seeks to put vital resources back into Michigan communities.
