Michigan Immigrant Rights Center

MILLA members have the opportunity to volunteer two hours a week at Michigan Immigrant Rights Center in downtown Ann Arbor. The Michigan Immigrant Rights Center  (MIRC) provides legal services to immigrants in southern Michigan. MIRC focuses on helping undocumented immigrant women who are victims of domestic violence to apply for U-Visas. This type of visa is available to immigrants who assist authorities with the reporting and prosecution of crimes. In addition, MIRC works with clients who have claims under the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), who need to adjust status, and who have other immigration issues.

Student volunteers work on components of the U-Visa process and also communicate with clients about their cases and interpret/translate for the attorneys and clients in Spanish.
